The soft top is opened and closed hydraulically

A pump in the roll bar (RB)/soft-top operation hydraulic unit (A7/5) generates the required operating pressure, and hydraulic cylinders actuate the mechanics of the soft top. There are a total of 7 hydraulic cylinders installed:

Hydraulic cylinder - open/close soft top, left
Hydraulic cylinder - open/close soft top, right
Hydraulic cylinder - lift/lower soft top bow, left
Hydraulic cylinder - lift/lower soft top bow, right
Hydraulic cylinder - unlock/lock soft top bow
Hydraulic cylinder - open/close soft top compartment cover
Hydraulic cylinder - unlock/lock soft top compartment cover

The soft-top system is controlled by the roll bar (RB)/soft-top operation control module (N52). It analyzes the positions of the limit and operating switches and correspondingly switches the solenoid valves (Y56/2y1.....Y56/y7) to actuate the hydraulic cylinders.

The solenoid valves (Y56/2y1.....Y56/y7) are provided on the soft top operation valve block (7 connections) (Y56/2).

The soft top is activated with the aid of the soft-top operation switch (S84), with the following functions being possible:

Open soft top
Close soft top
Stop function (interruption of soft-top operation)

Automatic extension/retraction of the roll bar
The roll bar in the extended position impairs the movements of the soft top, and therefore the roll bar is first automatically retracted with every soft-top operation.

At the end of each soft top opening and closing operation, the roll bar is always automatically moved into the position that it was in before the soft-top operation.

Automatic opening/closing of the side windows

Before the start of soft-top operation, the side windows are first completely opened to prevent damage to or jamming of the windows, or a collision with the linkage flaps.

Remote trunk release

The roll bar (RB)/soft-top operation control module (N52) cyclically supplies the information "SOFT TOP CLOSED", "SOFT TOP UNLOCKED" or "SOFT TOP OPEN" to the CAN databus.
As soon as the message "SOFT TOP UNLOCKED" is received, the pneumatic system equipment (PSE), combi-functions (A37) no longer performs any remote trunk release operations.

Chime from the overhead control panel control module (N70)
At the end of each soft-top opening or closing operation, a signal is sounded for 1 s from the

overhead control panel control module (N70), which confirms the correct implementation.
During driving mode and with an incorrectly locked soft top, a warning signal sounds for 10 s. For further output of the warning signal, the system must first be reset:
Ignition "ON" and "OFF" again or
Change in switch state of a limit switch

Monitoring of the soft-top functions
The duration of the actuation time of the solenoid valves (except with stop function) until the expected positions of the limit switches have been reached is checked in order to monitor the movement sequence of the soft top for each movement stage.

If the required time is exceeded, the sequence is interrupted and the error is stored in N52.
After ignition "OFF" and "ON" again the sequence can be continued.

Soft-top operation is blocked when

there is an undervoltage in the vehicle power supply (information comes over CAN databus),
a specific temperature threshold of the motor (A7/5m1) for the roll bar (RB)/soft-top operation hydraulic unit (A7/5) is exceeded,
vehicle velocity is not equal to 0 km/h (information comes over CAN databus),
various errors are stored in the roll bar (RB)/soft-top operation control module (N52)

(e.g. soft-top operation switch (S84) defective),
When the trunk lid is open, the soft top cannot be operated because the possibility of a collision between the trunk lid and the lid of the soft-top compartment cannot otherwise be ruled out.

If faults occur, the soft top can also be opened and closed manually.

The individual stages when opening the soft top

Stage 0
Soft top closed.

Stage 1
Turn the release lever to the right and gently raise the soft top. Then turn back the release lever and fold up.
Keep pressing the soft-top operation switch (S84).
The indicator lamp in the soft-top operation switch (S84) starts to flash on and off (until end of stage 10).

A remote trunk release is not possible until the soft top is completely open.
For safety reasons the opening procedure is interrupted immediately at any time (stop function) if the soft-top operation switch (S84) is released.

Stage 2
The side windows at the front and rear are opened electrically (if closed beforehand). The roll bar is lowered hydraulically (if raised beforehand).

Stage 3
The soft top bow is unlocked hydraulically.

Stage 4
The soft top bow is pivoted up hydraulically until in an approximately 90° position.

Stage 5
The soft top compartment cover is unlocked hydraulically.

Stage 6
The soft top compartment cover is pivoted upward hydraulically.

Stage 7
The soft top bow is moved hydraulically into the soft-top compartment.

Stage 8
The soft top is moved hydraulically into the soft-top compartment.
The temperature sensor (B10/4b1) for the air conditioning is automatically switched to ground potential by the roll bar (RB)/ soft-top operation control module (N52).

Stage 9
The soft top compartment cover is pivoted downward hydraulically.

Stage 10
The soft top compartment cover is locked hydraulically.

A signal sounds from the overhead control panel control module (N70) confirming the correct implementation.

Stage 11
The roll bar is raised (if not raised beforehand) and the side windows at front and rear are closed (if not closed beforehand). The indicator lamp in the soft-top operation switch (S84) goes out.

Top-up times for the hydraulic cylinders
Even after the individual limit switch positions have been reached, the corresponding hydraulic cylinder still remains actuated for a short time to compensate for tolerances of the limit switch switching points.

The individual stages when closing the soft top

Stage 0
Soft top open.

Stage 1
Keep pressing the soft-top operation switch (S84). The indicator lamp in the soft-top operation switch (S84) starts to flash on and off (until end of stage 11).

For safety reasons the closing procedure is interrupted immediately at any time (stop function) if the soft-top operation switch (S84) is released.

Stage 2
The side windows at the front and rear are opened electrically (if closed beforehand). The roll bar is lowered hydraulically (if raised beforehand).

Stage 3
The soft top compartment cover is unlocked hydraulically.

Stage 4
The soft top compartment cover is pivoted up hydraulically.

Stage 5
The soft top is moved hydraulically out of the soft-top compartment. The roll bar (RB)/ soft-top operation control module (N52) cancels the bridge for the temperature sensor (B10/4b1) of the air conditioning again.

Stage 6
The soft top bow is pivoted up hydraulically until in an approximately 90° position.

Stage 7
The soft top compartment cover is pivoted downward hydraulically.

Stage 8
The soft top compartment cover is locked hydraulically.

Stage 9
The soft top bow is pivoted downward hydraulically.

Stage 10
The soft top bow is locked hydraulically. A signal sounds from the overhead control panel control module (N70), the manual locking of the soft top can now be started (see stage 11).

Stage 11
Manually: Turn the release lever to the right and pull

the soft top toward the window frames.
Then turn the release lever to the left and fold up.

Stage 12
The roll bar is raised (if not raised beforehand) and the side windows at the front and rear are closed (if not closed beforehand).
The indicator lamp in the soft-top operation switch (S84) goes out.

Top-up times
Even after the individual limit switch positions have been reached, the corresponding hydraulic cylinder still remains actuated for a short time to compensate for tolerances of the limit switch switching points.
