L5 Crankshaft position sensor

The crankshaft position sensor is located at transmission end, under the left cylinder bank.

    P07.04-2341-11

Task
The crankshaft position sensor detects the crankshaft position and motor speed contactlessly over the teeth of the driven plate (incremental gear).
  Design
It consists of a plastic housing with an interior inductive coil and a 2-pin plug contact.

The clearance between the crankshaft position sensor and the teeth of the driven plate incremental gear is fixed by the installation position (approx. 0.8 mm).

Function

L5 Crankshaft position sensor

a Tooth leading edge
b Tooth trailing edge
c Gap (2 teeth missing)
h Signal of crankshaft position sensor
l Screened signal line
s Coil (inductive)

The front edge of a tooth (a) generates a positive voltage pulse and the rear edge (b) a negative voltage pulse.
The distance from the positive to the negative voltage peak equals the length of a tooth.
The gap (c) produced by 2 missing teeth results in no voltage being generated in the crankshaft position sensor. This gap is used to recognize the top dead center position of cylinders 1 and 6.
